When the United Kingdom fractured in the aftermath of the 'Great Flood' as it has come to be known in Scotland, much of the existing infrastructure and population were forced to disperse and either relocate away from the ever growing tides or perish. When Edinburgh and Glasgow flooded, the North was left to its own devices as all connections to the south were flooded. Without Hollyrood's guidance, the local towns and remaining villages in the region now known as Dundee banded together, but with a deteriorating food and fuel situation and with bandits rooming the countryside, the makeshift government quickly lost favor.
After barely managing to disarm plotters in New Crail, the old regime collapsed after a rebellion broke out in Cowdenbeath, spreading across the south. The sudden success of the rebellion and with word that the rebels were landing near the flooded remains of Scone, Parliament abandoned Dundee with official sources saying that they soon died to bandits while looking for asylum. With Dundee secured, a monarchy was established with the leader of the rebellion - stylized as Angus McFife I - taking full control of the country.
Since this rebellion, Fife has embarked on a program to centralize and rebuild the nation, aiming at restoring the glory of Scotland while also providing for the people. Administered from Dundee proper, the King's will is imposed across the Kingdom via a series of sheriffs appointed and ultimately responsible to the King and King alone.
From the ashes of the old world, the new world has been birthed. With Dundee doing its best to try and rebuild past glory, a new 'religion' has formed among the people. Combining the social and philosophical ideas of mechanism, the 'religion' known as Mechanism was founded in 2046 as part of an effort to save old-world technology, but also structure society and morality in service of what they call 'The Nexus'. While initially suppressed, the Mechanism have been allowed to freely operate provided they do not try and subvert the monarchy and follow its ordinances.
While most of Fife does not practice Mechanism, Mechanist groups have made their impact on Dundee. Being the second largest funder of adventuring parties and owning a multiple of guilds across the country, the Mechanist pursuit of old-world technology and relentless drive for efficiency and productivity has let Dundee recover and prosper even, though at a cost of reliance on foreign powers...
