With the rise of al-Shabaab in the Congo so came the inevitable terrorist attacks against the Global Consciousness Project. As the GCP was nominally atheist and did not participate in religion, it was an affront to everything al-Shabaab believes in and thus they had to be punished. Already there had been small scale attacks with bombs being thrown into GCP security points as well as skirmishes between the GCP mercenaries and the al-Shabaab terrorists, but now the 'war' had escalated. In the centre of the GCP administration an al-Shabaab mujahid broke into the head research facility and fired upon scientists and clerks with an automatic sub-machine gun. He was killed by guards quickly but not before he shot and killed 9 people and wounded over 20 more. The upscaled attacks seem to have come from the recent support (despite being unconfirmed) of Somalia and the Sultanate of Dafur for al-Shabaab which seems to have included more sophisticated weaponry. However, this was not the only attack as almost simultaneously a large-scale IED went off in the capital killing over 100 people and wounded countless more. The new use of IED's has seem to also come from the support of a radical new member from Ethiopia who has brought new tactics and strategies to the terrorist group.

As there have been a slow trickle of foreign Mujahideen into the Congo, the lands owned by the al-Shabaab terrorists only has grown. They have control over the outer provinces of the Congo and they only seem to be growing dramatically. The lands owned by al-Shabaab have actually increased in productivity and safety with crime being at an all time low due to the Hisbah or religious police. Undercover mercenaries from the GCP have also encountered the fact that the common Congolese person actually supports al-Shabaab more than they support the GCP. This is most likely due to the al-Shabaab rulership which promotes equality and egalitarianism under Islam wherein businesses are forced to have fair practices, people are treated the same under the law, and non Muslims are allowed to live fairly if they pay jizyah, a yearly tax paid for being non Muslim. While al-Shabaab encourages conversion (quite heavily) they do not treat non Muslims any different from the slowly growing Muslim population in the Congo.

Already the GCP control of the Congo was weak, but now it is hanging by a thread. It would not be long before al-Shabaab takes over more land and the GCP is forced to either back their bags or begin a full-scale war with the insurgents.
