As Burma is a Socialist Republic the religions of the nation must become compatible with socialism. The Burmese Way to Socialism as prescribed by President N'Ban La considers itself to be intrinsically linked with Buddhism and thus Buddhism must become compatible. The Buddhist Priests of Burma were originally aligned with the monarchist regime and thus during the revolution many were imprisoned and placed in re-education camps. Obviously this was a temporary solution to a permanent problem. President La and his religious advisor Wirathu, designed a plan to unite the once counter-revolutionary priests with the revolutionary government. Wirathu as a socialist priest has found a way to ensure that these other priests will be loyal to Burma.
The two men created the "Buddhist and Socialist Charter on Religion", a document signed by every high-ranking Buddhist monk in Burma. The document included definitions of what was acceptable within Buddhism and what would be counted as counter-revolutionary preaching. The major changes is that Buddhist charity would be increased by a large margin and socialism would be considered the natural state of the world. Wirathu made a speech on the charter:
"Look at the birds: we will see that they eat only as much food as their stomachs can hold. They cannot take more than that; they don’t have granaries. Look down at the ants and insects: that is all they can do. Look at the trees: trees imbibe only as much nourishment and water as the trunk can hold, and cannot take in any more than that. Therefore a system in which people cannot encroach on each other’s rights or plunder their possessions is in accordance with nature and occurs naturally, and that is how it has become a society continued to be one, until trees became abundant, animals became abundant, and eventually human beings became abundant in the world. The freedom to hoard was tightly controlled by nature in the form of natural socialism."
The charter has recognised that 'Buddhism' is a counter-revolutionary force and will be controlled heavily however, 'Socialist Dharma' will be allowed to run free and will be considered the national religion of Burma. President N'Ban La spoke of the charter too.
"Of all the modern economic theories, the economic system of Marxism is founded on moral principles, while capitalism is concerned only with gain and profitability. For this reason I still think of myself as half-Marxist, half-Buddhist, entirely Burmese."
With the charter signed and declared law by the government, religion would once again become a major part of the Burmese people's lives.
