Democracy is a fickle thing, it can often be taken by corruption, by malice, and by the want for power. Socotra was no different. The country had been thrown into anarchy when Admiral Bashar attempted to coup the comfortable government, and he had succeeded, be it very temporarily due to the intervention by the Tamilakam special forces. Socotran society was changed then-on, most citizens never saw their government in the same light, it was viewed as flawed, both morally and politically. They now existed under the watchful eye of the communists, one whose eye would never be extinguished by any one Socotran.
Years passed, things became mundane. Tamilikam’s wars had brought Socotra to the world stage during the invasion from Free City troops, A military that had once inhabited the island just as peacefully as the Tamil, suddenly leaving Socotra in absolute anarchy as they plundered the island of it’s few riches. By this time the administration had all but been infiltrated, the guise of democracy had been lifted, now exposing a corrupt oligarchy, headed by Tamilakam bureaucrats and other members of the communist party who wanted nothing but to milk the island of its resources and to use it as a staging ground for future endeavors into africa.
President Hariri was not void of criticism, she had been lying low after the coup, preferring to travel abroad rather than run her needy nation. Her absence was in fear, she did not know what foreign powers wanted of her, what her people wanted of her, and she was afraid of the notion that she may not be in power much longer. But after the catastrophe that was the pirate invasion, Hariri came back to Socotra, and with a vengeance. She reformed and reformed until no more reforming could be done, she became known around the globe as a crusader of freedom and democracy, as somebody who would not back down under impossible odds. She had won back the favor of her people, and the favor of the omnipresent, though friendly, Tamilikam.
And here we are now, Socotra, still a member of the WIO-CFA, is doing as well as ever, the Tamilakam have gone back home, though their influence still runs deep. Hariri is in office and as popular as ever, and Socotra is as it was fifteen years ago...
Except one small difference. Socotra, being a member of the WIO-CFA, have been granted oversight for the Afar isles, a nation once ruled by a demented old man, turned into a Tamilikam staging ground for the Kenyan war. The islands, like Socotra, are sparsely populated and majorly agrarian, but that does not mean that Hariri will toss them aside as if they were dust. No, Afar has just as much meaning to Socotra as Socotra itself.
May Socotra become a shining example of a functioning democracy, a bastion of education and a tower of international affairs!
Capital: Tamrida
