History
Pre-Collapse (Before 2030)
The island of Socotra was a small, bustling community that was a hub for tourism off the Middle-Eastern coast, which was controlled by Yemen, but largely wasnât affected by its politics.
Shortly before the collapse, seeing the writing on the wall, much of the wealthy elite in Yemen and other nations fled to the small island, knowing that both its geography and community would be largely unaffected by the impending disaster right across the sea. The rich quickly constructed safehouses in the vast wilderness that was isla Socotra, where their children, grandchildren and grandchildren's children could live in relative luxury until the sun collapsed in on itself.
As for the natives of the island, they were left to their own devices, with a steady source of food and water already being produced on the island.
Post-Collapse (2031-2035)
Though the news of the apocalypse was heard throughout the island, very few cared, the island of Socotra was completely unaffected by the flooding, and the politics of the mainland rarely influenced that on the island.
Life carried on as normal, as the people of Socotra expected everything to return to normal in just a few years.
Era of Change (2036-2070)
Eventually, the Socotrans realized the enormity of the great collapse, many luxury resources had been cut off from the lower-class for many years, and native Socotrans discovered that there were tens- if not hundreds of rich estates on the island.
Over an extended period of thirty years, the newly-discovered wage gap of Socotra was bridged, the free market was still a healthy concept on the island, though its size prevented that of corrupt capitalism that led to the destruction of the old world.
Early within this period, a free government was formed, a senate committee and a democratically elected President. The presidential role had an unlimited term, though, if a president was elected more than four times, they ruled for life, effectively allowing the Socotran people to willingly elect a monarch.
Socotra Now (2071-2140~)
The years of Socotra flew by for almost seventy years, presidents came and went, along with the formation of a small military and navy (consisting of only two fishing boats), which further solidified the legitimacy of the republic.
Due to the almost complete wipe of history post-collapse, the majority of the globe has no idea that Socotra exists, with information about the island only being remembered through shoddy assumptions made by historians pre-collapse on the mainland.
Government
The political system of Socotra is complicated to say the least, the small population of the island means that presidents and senators aren't based on a party, but their own personal opinions. This kind of politics can get messy, especially within the senate.
The Senate Council
The Socotran Senate, called the âHalmat Hasheedâ (literally meaning âThe Peoples Protectorsâ) are a group of democratically elected individuals (usually 1 per 1,000 person) who represent their town or village and who develop bills to present to the president. The Senate also has the ability to forcibly remove the president, though it has never been done.
President
The president of Socotra, for all intensive purposes, holds supreme power. The only reason that this system hasnât been abused is due to the fact that the majority of Socotrans are honest people who just want to continue living in a civilized community.
The president can be elected for 4 terms, each of which are 2 years long. In the case that the president is elected for more than 4 terms, they will become âPresident for Lifeâ, which means you have the honor of protecting the people of Socotra until the end of your life.
There have been five presidents, of which the most recent is President for Life Aaisha al-Hariri.
