"Our military doctrine is outdated. We've now got hundreds of armor units, hundreds of motorized infantry, anti-tank weapons, faster fighters, bombers with a range of half a continent, and yet we still think like we need only to march infantry into the enemy's lands to emerge as a victor in a war. Now this was fine when all of our enemies could be counted on one hand, and they had an army ten times smaller than ours, but now we face threats previously unknown to us. The fascist menaces, the hierarchical states, the oppressive theocracies, the sham republics, all enemies who would stop at nothing to see our way of life, our freedom, end, and deny us the ability to liberate their own people. Now, we have this new doctrine, this Deep Battle Operations doctrine, this all new way of battle, and we plan to utilize it to its fullest extent."
-Chairman Soto, Secret Speech to the Central Council
Deep Operation, also known as The Deep Battle Doctrine, is a tenet of the Union Military that emphasizes destroying and suppressing enemy forces not only along the line of contact, but throughout the depth of the battlefield. Directly inspired by (and somewhat copied from) the more than two century old Soviet doctrine of the same name. It was developed throughout the late 2150s to early 2160s by Amaya Jordan, the premier military thinker of the era. The concept of deep operations is a national strategy, tailored to the economic, cultural, and geopolitical position of the Union of Revolutionary Councils. This new approach considers military strategy and tactics, but also introduces a new intermediate level of military art: operations.
Using these templates, the Union developed the concept of deep battle and by 2161 it had become part of the Union Militia Field Regulations. Deep operations has two phases; the tactical deep battle, followed by the exploitation of tactical success, known as the conduct of deep battle operations. Deep battle envisages the breaking of the enemy's forward defenses, or tactical zones, through combined arms assaults, which would be followed up by fresh uncommitted mobile operational reserves sent to exploit the strategic depth of an enemy front. The goal of a deep operation is to inflict a decisive strategic defeat on the enemy's logistical abilities and render the defence of their front more difficult, impossible—or, indeed, irrelevant. Unlike most other doctrines, deep battle stresses combined arms cooperation at all levels: strategic, operational, and tactical.
