Lieutenant McRae was nervous. He had never done a presentation in front of the big brass before. But, he had given this presentation many times before: first to his immediate supervisor, then to their superiors. They had all told them his plan had merit.
"The Battle of Caribou," began McRae, as the slide projector flicked on a picture of the battle from a few months ago. "We failed to dislodge the Commie defenders in the battle, but we learned an important lesson. All of our infantry companies failed to leave the battle unscathed, but our armoured battalions did not suffer a single casualty. The Commies do not have sufficient firepower to penetrate our armour."
The slide projector flicked to the next slide: a picture of a tank. "This is the Ram Tank, designed and built for the Canadian Army during the war. By the end of the war, the design was considered obsolete, but a few surplus tanks were sitting around in the Halifax Armoury at the end of the war. It is those surplus tanks that made up our armoured battalions. Sadly, we no longer have the industrial capacity to build these tanks. The factories were destroyed in the flood."
The slide projector flicked again: a picture of a tractor. "It turns out that there are thousands of agricultural tractors in Atlantic Canada with powerful enough engines to propel an armoured vehicle. We can manufacture steel sheet metal in the mills in Springhill, and weld them to the tractor chassis. In doing so, we can triple our number of armoured vehicles in service."
Lieutenant McRae made a gesture, and the barn doors behind him opened up, revealing a grassy field. In the middle of the field was a... tank? It was plated in armour, and had a machine gun protruding out the front. The tractor motor sputtered to life, and the tank started rolling toward Lieutentant McRae. Infatrymen on one side began firing at the tank, bulleting pinging harmlessly off of its armour. It was a crude design, but it would have to do. The big brass smiled.
