[EVENT] The Border Line

Post Body

Richard looked at the line ahead of him. He guessed it was probably two, three hours long. He hoped that the vegetables that filled the back of his pick-up-truck would last that long. It was still another hour before the market in Grand Falls opened, but the first ones to arrive at the market were always the ones who could charge the highest prices.

"Why is the line so long," his wife Monique asked him.

"Well, the Maritimers are checking everyone's passports now. A year ago, you could just walk across the border, claim you were a refugee, and they would give you New Brunswick citizenship. They were desperate to attract as many enemies of the Commies as they could back then. But, now, well, now they say that you need to prove you are Canadian by birth or ancestry. And even when you *are* Canadian, you have to show your passport at regular checkpoints inside New Brunswick."

"But, didn't you go to the military office last week to get a Visa? Wasn't that supposed to let you skip the line?"

"No, they still have to check my visa. If I didn't have a visa, I wouldn't even be allowed to cross the border at all. *You* can cross the border because your parents were from Canada, but *I* am not allowed because I am only American on both sides."

Richard put his truck into gear and drove forward six feet before stopping again.

"It is a pain, for sure," Richard continued, "but they say that the Liberals needed to institute this policy because everyone was afraid of the Commie threats to flood the border with guerillas. The Canadians were afraid of too many Americans crossing into Canada. There were protests in the streets of Fredricton saying 'Americans go Home,' last week. We are lucky they still let us sell our vegetables at their markets."
