The snap of rifles echoed crisply through the valleys of Windham commune. Quietly and efficiently, the partisan snipers — most ex-veterans — targeted the itinerant Federal patrols from the edge of the forest, leaving no open space safe for exposure. Miles behind these snipers were thousands of volunteer soldiers, hap-hazardly organizing for re-assignment duties all across the front of New Hampshire and Vermont. Smaller troop sizes, the PLANE posited, assured guerilla victory. In the process of the war, nearly all professional-grade military equipment has been destroyed or damaged beyond immediate repair, leaving the only possibility of success down to the ingenuity of the freedom fighter.
Sticks carved to stab were hidden behind every tree and within every pasture. Deep pits obscured with debris dotted the landscape. Grenades and improvised explosives were tied to every branch, and every Federal soldier sat paranoid, thinking that there may be men outside his tent during the dead of night, bayonets fixed.
