Georgia’s fleet stands amidst some of the strongest navies in the Eastern Seaboard, nevertheless, her neighbors stand with fleets similar in size if not greater. Thus a shipbuilding drive is needed to get our naval construction up to code. In honor of Senator Carl Vinson of Georgia who spearheaded the passage of the Two Ocean Navy Act. the Carl Vinson Act approves a new spending bill increasing the navy’s budget and awarding shipbuilding contracts to Columbus Ironworks to expand slipway infrastructure in the city to construct larger hulls and repair our capital ships.
