Overview
Moldavians have long been a traditional bunch. The desire for "our sort of people" being in charge is a long standing convention that sometimes made a mockery of our democracy. Continuity was the word. This impulse had an effect which saw leader after leader gradually tighten their grip on power, so that when President Dzebren poured the national resources into a project to expand our borders and ameliorate a neighbouring nation state, it actually seemed like a good idea. Authoritarianism was always part of the picture.
Shifting Tides
In the last years, with what they have been asked to sacrifice, tolerance for Authoritarianism has waned in Moldavia. People are much less likely now than ever, to accept government or corporate espionage, controls on business or private matters, or hyper-militarism. Instead of the social pressure always favouring the government, and trust implicitly resting in the actions of State, the shift has been a popular one where favour of "our sort of people" has more to do with one's neighbour, than ones government.
Moldavia is becoming Honourable, in a palpable way, as people imbibe Moldavian decency, they exemplify it then, to others. Honour and decency, long the purview of Moldavian diplomats and international trade relations, is part of us. The "need" for Authoritarianism has degraded in the minds of Moldavians who are quite willing to do the decent thing after all, without corral.
