Hello, I am Brazilian. I'd like to share with you how two friends of mine are learning Portuguese. I think it might be useful for those who are beginners and don't know how to get started or even improve the Portuguese language by themselves. First off, they said that they started using Duolinguo and Memrise. These language apps have interesting features for free, in other words, you don't need to subscribe or spend money to use them. Besides that, they also said that they have been using Ankidroid and shared decks. I have tried Ankidroid when I was learning English and it was quite good and it is open source. Some people like to study through grammar books. They said that their favorite one is: Modern Brazilian Portuguese Grammar: a practical guide by John Whitlam. It also has a workbook which is very useful as well. You can google them and you will easily find them. Their favorite Youtube Channel is: Speaking Brazilian Language School. It has original content and several daily conversations. Their favorite newspapers in Portuguese are Folha de São Paulo, Estadão, O Globo, El País (Brasil), and CNN Brasil. If you are interested in Brazilian news in English, I highly recommend The Brazilian Report. One of my friends has shared his favorite Instagram account that focuses on the Portuguese language: (@) learnportuguesonline and (@) portugueseasy -- I checked out both of them. I think the most useful is (@) portugueseasy because it has several idioms, original flashcards, and a bilingual list of linking words. Speaking of dictionaries, they prefer using Google translator but one of them said that his favorite hardcover dictionary is "Webster's Dictionary (Portuguese-English)", it was also published by John Whitlam, who unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago (He was British and he was so good at Portuguese that he even worked as a translator for the European Union). When I asked them what they believe is the most important tip to give other learners, they said "it's the courage of making mistakes. Speak as much as you can. Brazilian people are helpful, they will encourage and support you." Well, I cannot finish this post not mentioning this subreddit and the amazing community that daily shapes it with great debates and tips. We are very lucky in having this subreddit. Feel free to PM me to practice Portuguese or other tips. Até mais, galera!! :)
