Oregon’s drug decriminalization effort sends less than 1% of people to treatment

As someone who did a lot of drugs in my youth, I cannot disagree enough. I did drugs because it was fun. I probably had more going for me at that point in my life than any time before or since. Sure, it ended up costing me some things in the long run, but I didn't start using because I was depressed, I started using because it was exciting.

Sure, that's why I think drugs -- even hard drugs -- should be legal and regulated. But I have no sympathy for someone who stays up for 3 days and then decides to chase a random pedestrian with a machete. Once someone shows themself to be a danger to society they need to put away until they're no longer a danger.

How so? It keeps them from harming other people, where none of the other options (e.g. voluntary treatment, "housing first" approaches, etc.) do.
