A hard fought series against Prince George came to an end in 2nd OT last night, as the Hawks come out on top with a 2-1 win on the road. After a scoreless first period that saw Portland's #71 Josh Davies get a double minor and game misconduct for fighting, Portland put the first point on the board very late in the 2nd when #89 Nate Danielson caught a pass from #92 Jack O'Brian and whipped it past the shoulder of PG's goalie. Not six minutes into the 3rd, and PG evened it up with a pass from behind the net by #17 Zac Funk to a slap shot by #18 Borya Valis.
A scoreless third sent the game to overtime, but that also went scoreless, and so in 2nd OT, after 5:43 of hard play, #2 Josh Mori passed up-ice to #71 Josh Davies, who made a beautiful slap shot to find the net just above the goalie's shoulder, ending the Cougar's post season hopes and sending the Hawks to the League Finals.
Who are we going to play starting next week? That remains to be seen, as the Eastern Conference Championship series is tied 3-3 between the Saskatoon Blades and the Moose Jaw Warriors, with both teams winning home and away. The final game will happen tonight, with puck drop at 6pm, and the outcome will determine if the Hawks have home ice advantage (home if Moose Jaw wins, away for Saskatoon).
In any event, LET'S GO HAWKS!
UPDATE: In another clencher game, Moose Jaw toppled #1 overall seed Saskatoon 3-2 in overtime, which means Portland has HOME ICE ADVANTAGE! Game 1 will be this Friday at 7pm at the Coliseum! Everyone come and cheer the boys on!
