So, this'll be a bit of a long one while I give back history, data and my viewpoint. The BLUF though is this:The Democratic party has shown between 2016 and now that it has no interest in progressive policies, we need to look at a new solution.
I still remember how much I would hear from new outlets and DNC officials through the entire 2016 run how 1) Bernie was a radical and would lead to a Republican president, 2) How Bernie had no true support 3) How Bernie was harming Hillary by debating her. I remember how the news outlets counted every super delegate as being Hillary's in the delegate count, it's how I learned about super delegates. Once we got to the convention, we watched the as they said without question that Hillary was not only the nominee but that all this "radical" talk needs to stop. It was one of the first times I can remember being bluntly told to "get in line" with the party.
Once the primaries were over, Bernie campaigned. Folk like to pretend he didn't or that somehow he didn't do enough, but he did a lot more than most do. Maybe he was hoping that Hillary would adopt some of his policies - I know I was, some sign that she would extend an olive branch which never came. So, we loose.
The next day, not even 24 hours, I read the first article in The Hill about how Bernie and his supporters cost the Democrats the election. If they had only done right and obeyed the will of the DNC, we'd have won. But, honestly, they persuaded a lot of people from wanting to vote. There were whole segments mocking Trump as a joke candidate, saying Hillary had won and snubbing Bernie supporters who wanted acknowledgement. I voted for her, because I didn't want Trump, but I wasn't happy about it. So, you can imagine my thoughts when, afterwards, I was blamed for not trying hard enough.
This blaming is going on right now. There are Think Pieces being written right this second proposing what to do if the "Bernie Bros" poison the well. I've read them because, unfortunately for me, I got interested in politics after 2016.
In the time since 2016, Bernie has sparked waves of progressive policy changes. Heck, Biden didn't believe in Medicare For All in any form before this, he just wanted to "maintain Barracks legacy" with ACA. We wouldn't have people like A.O.C., Illhan Omar and Presley without 2016. Good things came out of it.
But ya'll, when Biden looses - and I've seen almost nothing to indicate he'll win beyond the idea that anyone beats President Trump - they will blame the progressives. The DNC is more interested in courting Republican voters away from Trump then they are in progressive votes. One of the DNC strategists on Bill Maher literally spoke about how you can't count on the youth vote, so don't even bother giving them concessions. This is the age of the quiet part being said outloud.
So, what are we going to do?Are we going to sit around until we inherit the party? Are we going to just scrape for every scrap they throw us from the table? Are we just going to stay home because it doesn't matter apparently?
Progressives, we need to start thinking of how to extract ourselves from the Democrats. Let them be the Republican-lite party and fade. I'm not saying I have the answers to how to do this without becoming the new Green party, but staying with the Democrats ain't working. We're just their escape goats.
Addemdum (The following are things I will simply ignore as arguments or acknowledge but don't think pretains here):
- Don't like Biden? Vote for Trump - Ya'll can just leave, I don't care to debate you on this topic atm, not a post about you and I don't need MAGA! yelled at me for the 50th time.
- But some Bernie Bros voted for Trump - Yes, they did. Not historically as many Hillary supporters voted for McCain over Obama.
- You lost, get over it - Primary is still ongoing, but maybe we've lost. I'll vote to remove President Trump, but that's the end of the alliance. The whole point of this post isn't to debate not voting for Biden, it's to argue that after that - seconds after Biden is sworn in - we need to make some noise and leave.
Post Script: Lastly, first time posting in this forum. Will be ascribing this elsewhere but I thought making my case might help. If not, I'm sure a Mod will remove the post or tell me to edit. Thank you for reading this far. I look forward to the discussion.
