There is a lot of discussion, especially on the Democratic platform, on removing the electoral college system in exchange for the popular vote. However, there seems to be a lack of discussion on what seems like another good solution- keeping the electoral college system and replacing the winner take all allocation with proportional allocation of electoral votes (which states like Maine and Nebraska use). In these cases it still allows for a break up of "battle ground" states and allows specific contrarian counties within a state to feel like their voice is heard.
Is there a reason why there is such a strong push for eliminating the electoral college system all together in place for the popular vote? Is it just easier than coercing all 48 states to replace the winner take all system with the proportional allocation system? Can proportional allocation of the presidential election be mandated on to the states or is this a power strictly held by each state? What's the benefit of popular vote over proportional allocation or vice versa? Let's keep the assumption that the winner-take-all electoral system clearly has problems with representation and swing states and focus mainly on proportional allocation vs popular vote.
