1998, 2002, and 2022 are largely regarded as the only recent good midterms for the party that controlled the White House. While 2002 was easily the best out of all of those (for obvious reasons) what was more impressive for the democrats?

In this election, republicans lost house seats, while still claiming a majority, and had a net gain of 0 in the senate. The governor races were essentially a wash as well. This is one of the only elections where the out of power party lost house seats, an impressive feat.

In this election, republicans reclaimed the house, but struggled to do so. It’s the first election since 1934 where no incumbent Democratic senators lost, and democrats defied history and gained seats in state legislatures and Governor mansions. Only 1 incumbent Democratic governor lost
