A few things first; I know the game just came out, I know there is a wide range audience playing the game (from kids to Pokémon loving adults such as myself), and I know that this is many players’ first MOBA.

I want to share some tips that will instantly help players new to the genre. I am not a League of Legends pro or anything, so this is just basic stuff to help. Please add more beginner friendly tips.

1. This is a team game. This is the most important aspect. Play like a team. Help each other. Fight together when it’s time. Spread out across the map at the beginning and focus on objectives together. If you see a teammate nearby who is getting pushed then consider helping them if it’ll help your team. Know when to fight and when not to fight. Remember, the objective is to score points, not just knock out the enemy 20 times. When you play every game as a team, you will start winning more.

2. Look at the mini map most of the time. That’s where your eyes should be. This is a team game. Look at where the other team is applying pressure and look for opportunities for your team. If you see 4 enemies on the other side of the map then maybe you help fight them off, or maybe this is your chance to score points on the side that you’re on. Looking at the map will also help you get Knocked Out less because you will know when enemies are trying to push or gank you, so you can be prepared or even escape before the enemy arrives.

3. This game doesn’t teach a few helpful mechanics. You can recall and return to your base with down on the d-pad. This is helpful if you need to get the heck out of a sticky situation.

You are invisible in bushes as long as enemies aren’t in the same bushes. Use this to hide, surprise enemies, or to get away and recall.

Use the super jump in your base after you recall to gain a lot of ground on the map.

1. Fight the strong Pokémon on the maps. Ludicolo and bouffalant give you status boosts. Rotom and dreadnaw help too. If your team takes Zapdos then you have a strong chance to win. Take these objectives as a team. It is great if you can beat the enemies then take the objectives.

2. Don’t fight the enemy early game under their own bases. They will continue to heal and be difficult to beat. Go work on other objectives and try to fight under your base. One helpful strategy is to “poke” the enemy and get them to chase you towards your base. So attack, retreat a little, attack more.

3. Level up more. If the enemy is several levels stronger than your team then focus on objectives and level up before engaging.

4. Always be doing something. This is important for any game really. You should always be doing something that helps win. Don’t wait on timers for Pokémon like rotom to spawn. You can be scoring points or catching Pokémon while you wait.
