Anyone know why the SM Base set starters say 2016 instead of 2017?

I was taking a look at some extra cards I had lying around and I noticed that my SM Base set Popplio has 2016 in the bottom corner.

At first I didn’t give it much of a second thought, since the set came out right after Evolutions so I thought maybe SM released at the end of 2016. But then I noticed my Pinsir says 2017 and I checked online and SM Base released February 2017.

I took a look at the SM Base set card list, and Popplio, Rowlet, and Litten all have 2016 in the bottom, but not their evolutions. Every other card I saw said 2017.

Anyone know why this is?
