Hello PokeReddit! I come to you today, after the release of the latest trailer, with a tinfoil hat and a fistful of crackpot theories, to explain why Game Freak has shown us the latest Eeveelution's typing.
We got shown Terastal, the new major combat gimmick of this region. This is likely my biggest stretch, but its not without precedence - though Eevee's new evolutions come through new gimmicks to new gens, its usually not the MAJOR gimmick, such as Terastal, Mega Evolution or Z-Moves.
But they started their explanation of Terastal with a very specific Pokemon - Eevee, stating that it would typically be Normal when Terastalized, but could be found in Grass or Water typings. Not surprising, since Leafeon and Vaporeon both exist, so we can nod our head and go "Yeah, that typing makes sense, its Eevee!" But we saw multiple times other Pokemon with other typings that make less sense - Pikachu with Flying Tera type, Gardevoir with Water, Hydreigon with Grass. So where am I going with this...?
The only Tera types we got shown in this trailer were Normal, Water, Grass, Fire, and Flying. Which is a weird spread of types, right?
In addition to that, the only Pokemon types we see shown during the Terastal section of the trailer are Normal, Water, Grass, Fire, Flying, Electric, Psychic, Dark, Fairy, Ghost and Dragon - but the Ghost we see is Driftblim, and the Dragons we see are Dragonite and Hydreigon, and of these three, only Hydreigon shares a typing with an Eeveelution, same as every other Pokemon except Driftblim and Dragonite.
So we have this odd type out situation. Why show Flying so heavily? Why limit the Pokemon shown in the Terastal section as all Pokemon who share a type with an Eeveelution, then bring in two Flying types - neither of whom are shown using the Flying Tera Type, I might add?
Considering the fact they specifically singled out Eevee for the explanation, about a new gimmick introduced this generation, and now this connection... Its still a little weak, but crackpot theories are nothing if not stretches.
So what's the bow that ties it all together...? Chloe.
The next episode of Pokemon Journeys is titled "The Possibilities are Endless for Chloe and Eevee!" This ep will air tomorrow, the 5th of Auguest, and as the title implies, its got a focus on Chloe and her Eevee, which has thus far shown no reaction to evolution stones, but it does like to mimic other Eeveelutions.
Game Freak loves using the anime to show off new Pokemon, and will oftentimes use the anime to announce new Pokemon as its official announcement. Togepi, Marill, Bonsly, Lucario and Sylveon come to mind.
And with that, we have a clear thread from the Pokemon Presents to the anime to revealing a new Pokemon. A brand new Flying Type Eevee!
> "But but but Eeveelutions have always been based off the Special types! Flying is a Physical type!"
You say this as if Game Freak has never broken their 'rules' before. Fairy type was included, though many would argue that Fairy would have been on the Special side of things.
> "Why not Dragon type? We get shown two Dragons, you even said so! Dragon is also a Special type, the only one not used for an Eeveelution!"
Because as soon as you consider Dragon as the new Eeveelution, the whole theory comes crashing down. Why show off Flying if the new Eevee is a Dragon? Why have Driftblim in the trailer? The thread becomes messy and stops making sense.
> "This already makes no sense, and I hate you."
Bit personal, but sure. You do you.
TL;DR - Flying type Eevee. BOOM.
