I never thought that I'd say that. I used to be someone who hated stamina systems. I would argue that they're anti-fun mechanics that punish players for simply wanting to play. At worst, I thought that they were just further cash-grabs trying to monetize player engagement.
While those arguments might not be baseless, Pokemon Masters has showed me the other side of the coin.
Stamina systems give developers hard numbers to work with when balancing rewards economies. If players can only farm something n times in a day, the amount of rewards provided have to reflect that. If something only has a chance of dropping, the rate has to be high enough to accommodate the inherent speed limit a stamina system puts on progression. For time limited events, the added constraint of how long the event runs has to be weighed against other stamina drains the player will have to compromise on.
All of those factors come together to create an economy that is more rewarding per play than the economy we have in Pokemon Masters, and this is only made more apparent by the current Mewtwo event. This event is - put charitably - uncharitable. The amount of grinding expected of the player to simply get Mewtwo is unpleasant but manageable (which is expected from a free character this strong). However, the grind to get enough materials to unlock all of Mewtwo's level caps and moves is dreadful, and the Sync Level and Potential increases are a verifiable war crime.
Not only is the design terribly unfun, but it also encourages bad behavior from the players. There's already a big enough problem with players setting themselves on Auto in Co-op Mode, so creating an event that requires so much grinding that no human will ever be able to complete this manually only worsens that problem. Players trying to complete the event in earnest will struggle as their teammates' Auto AI struggles to do anything, and that worsens the experience for everyone involved. It's just not good design.
TL;DR: Stamina Systems are bad, but if they exist, the rewards economy has to be balanced around them. Without it, the rewards economy is balanced against how many times an Auto Clicker can farm an event which hurts people engaging with the game normally.
If I could offer a suggestion for the future of Pokemon Masters events, I would argue that there should be daily play limits on event missions similar to Super Courses. This would create that counter-balance to the economy and give us a reason to actually appreciate having Replay Tickets which are kinda useless at the moment.
These are just my thoughts on the matter, though. What do you think? Is this event fine or does there need to be some kind of change in the future?
