I'm tall and awkwardly shaped, and I carry a disproportionate amount of weight around my middle. I tend to panic-buy whatever clothes fit, I have no idea what suits me, and I don't understand matching at all, and because of all this, I'd pretty much given up on "real" clothes. I've been living in leggings for years, because they are easy and comfy and I mostly work from home. But I've been in the office more at my current job, and it's been rough to use my paltry non-legging wardrobe. I used a clothes delivery service for a while, but it was expensive and I didn't like the clothes. And I don't need lots of clothes, just a few staples a month.
So I tried a clothing rental instead, and I love it. First of all, my life is not super exciting, and looking through all the clothes is fun. There are so many! Second of all, they are good quality clothes - heavy and flowy and good material, and generally much nicer than what I've afforded before. Third of all, they make me feel like a million dollars. I rent big dresses, and sleek trousers, and poofy-sleeved tops, and, yes it's still my awkwardly-shaped body in them, but I like it more. I float down the stairs to the train on my big cotton dress like Mary Poppins; I put my hands in my pockets of my swishy wide-legged pants when considering the issue at hand; I help pull in the big package because these comfy dungarees are also pretty tough. Fourth of all, and finally, if I like a certain piece I'll keep it longer, otherwise I rotate them out every few weeks. I've kept that Mary Poppins dress for 6 weeks so far.
I'm honestly sort of shocked about how happy this is making me. I even enjoy the experiment of wearing the bits I don't like. I know in this day and age we are all empowered to be however and whoever we want to be, and it's fine to be all leggings all the time. But I think I'd like to be half all leggings and half fancy rented clothes, at least for now.
I rented for a few years from a service that specialized in plus size clothes. It was great. I loved always having something different to wear to work, I got to buy a lot of clothes that were taken out of the rental cycle for dirt cheap. My CO workers loved to see what I'd wear next.
The pricing just got too high for me as they kept raising it. It's now $80 a month for 1 piece at a time!
I would totally go back though if it were more affordable
