Diamonds are only chunks of coal
That stuck to their jobs, you see;
If theyâd petered out, as most of us do,
Where would the diamonds be?
It isnât the fact of making a start,
Itâs the sticking that counts. Iâll say,
Itâs the fellow that knows not the meaning of fall,
But hammers and hammers away.
Whenever you think youâve come to the end,
And youâre beaten as bad as can be,
Remember that diamonds are chunks of coal,
That stuck to their jobs, you see.
By Minnie Richard Smith: as published in Christian F. Kleinknecht: âPoor Richardâs Anthology of Thoughts on Successâ (1947), page 44
