Hello r/poetry, I'm currently studying for an admissions test and one thing I've struggled with always was poetry analysis and interpretation. Despite the effort i've put in to trying to read more poems and get more familiar with the genre, i can't seem to interpret it correctly (resulting in me answering wrongly). Are there any tips that anyone could give me to assist me in this department.
I'll give an example of my problems; take the poem ''the Flea'' by John Donne. Everyone in my class managed to understand the first time that it was about premarital sexual relations, however i'm hear scratching my head thinking the poem was about the poor flea. I understand that I might be interpreting the poems a bit too literally, but i can't seem to go past this mental block.
Any help would be appreciated :D
