Andrew Marvell was a metaphysical poet, which was a label retrospectively applied to poetry which made use of elaborate conceits. To His Coy Mistress is a carpe diem poem, in other words, a poem which attempts to persuade someone to seize the day (i.e. sleep with the poet!), because life is short and soon we will all be dead ('your quaint honour turn to dust / and into ashes all my lust').
Marvell had a varied life and lived through a tumultuous historical period. He was the MP for Hull, thus putting Hull on the map as an unlikely poetic hotspot, a phenomenon echoed by Phillip Larkin 300 years later.
