Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old—
This knight so bold—
And o’er his heart a shadow—
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow—
‘Shadow,’ said he,
‘Where can it be—
This land of Eldorado?’
‘Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,’
The shade replied,—
‘If you seek for Eldorado!’

Over the Mountains of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow
I interpreted it as the life story of a brave and courageous person. Someone who had pushed hard their whole life seeking all there was of life and having relied on their own strength and intelligence, but felt disparity and hopelessness towards the end of their life when old age robbed physical strength and sharpness of mind. But just at the end, as death is closing in, a spirit reveals to them that they are not just an aging and dying body, but a soul that has essence. Their soul is actually who they are, and their soul will still find a renewed strength in eternity. The spirit is an usher of sorts, helping the knight make peace (and maybe even look forward to) his approaching death.
