last time I got hurt

I barely made it out alive  

I said to myself 

enough with this love  

Take your time  

Build a wall around yourself  

At least for a while  


Then one late summer evening  

The sun went down and the grapes turned red  

Next thing I know  

I was laying in her bed  

And I said  

take your time  

Keep that wall up 

At least for a while  


Now walls come tumbling down  

and I hate it when she's not around  

I write poems about her  

and she sings my song  

And I'm hoping it'll stay that way  

at least for a while
