I'm scared to cosplay as a fat person...
Post Body

I'm going to my first convention in May, and I'm super stoked. I'm going as a character I really like and I hope people recognize them. However, I know the cosplay community has a reputation of not exactly liking fat and plus size people. I've heard horror stories of people cosplaying their favorite characters just to be fat shamed and not allowed in cosplay contests simply because they have more meat on their bones. Anyone that cosplays and is fat is seen as cringe and ugly. I personally struggle with my weight because of my depression and I'm hoping to lose more weight before the con, but even wearing a girdle and shapewear doesn't seem to hide my stomach.

The character I want to dress as is extremely skinny, but it's too late for me to change who i'm going to be because I got a lot of my supplies today to make the costume. I'm terrified of being ignored and treated poorly at the convention just because I'm fat. I already know all the skinny cosplayers are going to get more love and I probably won't... I don't know what to do. I already bought my supplies, as I said, and I already have tickets to go.

What do I do??

I’m going to fanime in May! I usually go every year and I don’t really have anyone complaining or saying anything negative to me about my cosplays. Last year I did nami where she wears the jeans and bikini top and it was lots of fun (: I’m doing Raven this year. If you want to lose weight before the con, cool. But please don’t feel like you have to! Tons of plus sized people cosplay as thinner characters and have a blast :) I hope you do too !
