I have a house built in the 50’s with a two knob style tub that has brass valves like this.
Several times a year, the hot water valve dies. Won’t turn off, drips forever, etc. When I take them out, they’re discolored and the rubber gasket is falling apart. So, I get a new one, grease everything up, replace it (and the seat). Works great, no leaks. Later in the year, same issue all over again.
Is it possible that I’m using the wrong valves? (If so, how do you figure out the right valve on a 70 year old faucet?). What could cause these things to die so fast?
