Best OS for filesharing?

Hi guys! I’ve got a DS918 as a PMS. Unfortunately al the bays are getting full. So I’ve took my old HTPC AMD from the basement and gonna use it as a extra fileserver. Its an 8 years old fractial XL with 8x 3.5” bays and A10-5800k chip. Ive replaced the coolpast and cooler for a CM hyper evo 212 and it’s getting around 40/50 degrees on idle with Windows 10 as OS. However, the CPU % is getting between 10-20% usages on 2.8/3.0Ghz while being idle.

Do you guys think this is normal for a 8 year old chip with a brand new cooler? Or do I need to have a different OS?

Ive tried FreeNAS but unfortunately my chip and mobo where not compatible with FreeNAS( that’s what google says). Everytime when I transferd big data to it, the fileserver whent down and freezes.

So I went for a W10 OS but I think the OS is using to much CPU for the purpose of the fileserver.

Its not even connected with a monitor or anything. I just run it as a fileserver, that’s all.

Bear in mind that I do not have expierence with any sort of CLI OS..

Help me out!
