Want to start hosting my content and server locally

I have been using plex for a long time through a website service. Basically I’m paying for hard drive space remotely and hosting my plex media and server on there. I’m feeling like it’s just better to do it from my home with my own hardware instead. Any recommendations on devices to use?
Also, does anyone have advice for how to download all that content from the website drive without my internet provider charging me a crazy amount for going over my monthly download limit?
