Hey all,
So I was looking at setting up my first NAS for Plex and a friend had recommended the DS920 as the one to get as they use it.
Unfortunately it seems that this range has been discontinued (can't find any units available shipping to Ireland). The range has been replaced with the DS923
Like for like the best alternative I could see was the QNAP TS-464 but I see they have a range of security issues previously so this is putting me off.
When I looked at the 923 vs 920 it seems the biggest difference is the new model went from Intel Celeron to AMD Ryzen chip and it does not have the ability to transcode. So I'm wondering exactly what devices would you need to be able to transcode for? Like I assume Xbox, laptops, smart TVs etc are all fine but what about smartphones?
Also I would eventually plan on giving access to the plex account to 2 or 3 family members and maybe 1 or 2 close friends. Is the AMD chip going to struggle in any way with this?
And of course if you have better suggestions I am all ears (I am looking at max price for the NAS at 700euro and I don't mind going down in bays with bigger hard drives if required). Also I want to keep all "additional" work at a minimum so like port, firewalls etc as simple as possible.
Never even considered it, and while I imagine it's not that difficult, I would prefer my first one to come ready to essentially plug and play
Short term, I suppose that's not a lot of extra work to just remember to make two versions of the title.
I'm not familiar with software for doing that, but I'm sure I will find something out there. And then I assume you just set the different resolutions up in Plex the same way you do different editions of the same movie?

Thank you!! Everything above was very useful.
Is the 4K movies going to become the more common movie format in future the only thing I'd be concerned about if I'm planning on future proofing (I do have a 4K tv)
