Noob need adivce

When I play alone I can barely make it to day 15 on my own. When playing with a group the farthest we've got I believe is day 12.
What can I/we do to get farther? I've seen people reach day 89 on here.
When I/we play alone, we avoid extra food cards and always go for more people. We only take extra food if the other option is even worse like cooking time 20% slower.
