What’s the difference between chats and DMs here?

I feel like I’ve only ever used the chat feature. Recently I found out people doing answer chats unless they’ve spoken to the person in a sub already. A couple people posted about only readings direct messages so now I feel like I’m missing something. Do they show up in different places in the app? Do you have a preferred way to talk to users?
