High ammonia and nitrite in new Walstad tank

Post Body

Hello everyone! I'm very new to planted tanks and have had my first one set up now for just about a week. I went with a dirted Walstad style tank. I bought the api master test kit yesterday and finally got around to testing my water today. My ammonia and nitrite were both at around 3, nitrate was 5. I wasn't expecting to see zeros, but I was a little shocked that the values were so high considering my tank is relatively heavily planted. I did add some floating plants in yesterday so hopefully that will help balance everything a little quicker. About how long does it usually take a Walstad to get to normal levels? Makes me wonder why she suggests adding fish on day one...
