How do I connect scenery items to Thrill rides?

I see so many steam workshop builds around Thrill or Family rides and I want to build my own personal themed ride but whenever I start a build, nothing connects to the ride itself. I'm not sure what im supposed to be doing. Not being able to connect my scenery items to the ride is confusing me.
