Inside tunnels / caves isn't dark?

I don't know if this is a lack of a feature or a bug for me, but when I make tunnels and caves, the light gets dimmer, but hovers at a certain ambient brightness, never getting anywhere close to completely dark no matter how deep the tunnel and how many twists and turns.
This light level becomes dark when it is dark outside, but not when it is daytime.
Does anybody know why this is happening? I heard this game had an advanced lighting system so this problem is perplexing
