TLDR; fantastic, elegant hardware. weak functionality for Dropbox, MSOffice, Evernote, and Webex.
Had my pixelbook for a total of two days. Loved the design and size. Smaller and lighter than I even expected, having never seen one in person. Unfortunately for my own business, as well as my employer It was lacking functionality in certain key apps that I just couldn't overcome. Many of my use cases involve working in remote areas, and needing access to large files while not being connected to the cloud. It appears much of the chromeOS functionality relies on being connected, all the time, which is great in the US, but I'm often in an area with no or weak connectivity. Even without the connectivity issues, I just couldn't make it work in some key cases. As much as I wanted to.
I know you can do esoteric things like load GNU/Linux or that windows emulator/VM thingy, but I don't have time for that. I just need things to work.
Here are some examples where I just couldn't make it work:
Dropbox
Even with the file browsing chrome extension, there is no concept of offline/selective sync like there is on my mac. To edit a large video file for example, I either need to be connected to the cloud, and wait for it to load, which sucks, or copy it to a local folder - which kind of defeats the purpose of having dropbox, since now I have two versions of the file in two different locations. I know you can have offline file access in google drive, but my business has an extensive dropbox hierarchy, and that's not going to change.
Office - MSOffice is crippled unless you sign up for an office365 yearly subscription. Even then, it's missing some functionality compared to the Mac app. I also don't care for the online interface of MSOffice. That may be petty, but I'm old and set in certain ways. Not to mention much of my business docs are in office and they're not going to change over to gdocs just because I got a pixelbook.
Evernote - this is a prime example of an app having three different versions that all suck in different ways. - the chrome extension, the chrome app, and the android app. I have evernote plus, and spent an evening trying to figure out how to make folders available offline - before realizing you can't do this in the chrome extension or app, and it's buried in the 'settings' of the android app.
Cisco Webex - This was the deal breaker. I'm on one or more webexes every day. None of the webex extensions or apps support CREATING a webex meeting. You can join one, but you can't actually create a new one. This made the chromeOS a complete non-starter.
In closing, I'd like to say I appreciate all of this subs replies and answers to my questions. Hopefully some of these issues can get worked out or they will be supporting windows soon, and I'll be re-joining the community of pixelbook owners. I really do like the ChromeOS paradigm.
