Just picked up Pikmin 2 on Switch. Total newbie to the series: Beginners tips?

More or less as it says in the title. I jumped straight into 2 because the time pressure of 1 scared me off a smidge. Been enjoying it so far. Not sure how many there are, since the game seems pretty simple, but figured I'd check just in case: Any good beginner's tips?
One thing, in particular, I'd like to know is how much I should be using white and purple Pikmin since they seem like more of a hassle to restock on.
