How to avoid bouncing off academic papers?

Post Body
I am currently doing honours research, but I'm finding myself bouncing off many of the papers I need to be reading for background before I absorb anything, or end up grinding myself against the wall trying to understand them until I can't really focus anymore. Do any of you have advice on how to "get in the groove" and make meaningful progress on reading and understanding many dense papers?
