Opinion: 2000s was one of the best decades for Philippine television

While obviously, the previous and succeeding decades after 2000s had its memorable, record-breaking moments, and numerous people that reached superstardom, we can’t deny that the legacy of 2000s still hits up to this day. Not to mention me being a little biased as a Gen Z who looks to this era nostalgically.

Nowadays, network competition is still there but with alliances and innovations being made since ABS-CBN’s shutdown, competition is now a little more peaceful. However for me, 2000s was one of the decades that network war was an open secret and both networks were really upping their game and constantly making quality shows and actors.

ABS-CBN had a knack for game and reality shows. These shows were really attracting the public’s attention. I remember people congregating at our barangay watching a Deal or No Deal episode, or a PBB eviction being the talk in our elementary class. Not to mention the fun of watching Game KNB followed by Wowowee (when Willie was still not that problematic). While ABS-CBN stars back then were really prominent, and the teleseryes were high rated, the other network was just on a roll of producing teleseryes and, at the time, a quite new genre of dramas called fantaseryes.

GMA produced big stars that are still relevant today, especially with Starstruck. Plus it had Encantadia, Darna, Mulawin and others which were not only entertaining but also inspired a generation of kids, especially LGBTQ kids that are now adults today. Albeit not much of a reality and game show maker, its fair share of live, reality and variety shows also made a staple, especially with Eat Bulaga being there. Also the historic SOP which produced and trained an incredible roster of singers especially Ms. Regine Velasquez (before SOP was already a star but SOP really proved Regine’s capabilities) Kyla and Lani Misalucha.

Do you agree with me? Or are there any other times in Philippine TV that is worth mentioning?
