Posted before asking if anyone wanted to grapple with me. Got some questions about it. This is a story of my latest experience. Also posting so I can find other practitioners here because there are barely any.
I'm a striker, which means I prefer to fight standing up. I'm still new to grappling. This is what happened to me the last time I rolled (Rolling is the sparring version of grappling). Hoping this story can encourage people to try. If you are fully capable of practicing martial arts (physically, mentally, financially, etc.), go for it.
For context, below are my physical traits
165 cm
65 kg
Lean athletic
I'm a strong guy. It's a brag, but it's also a fact. I'm stronger than most people. Despite my small stature, I'm strong because I know how to train for strength. But when it comes to fighting, size and strength can only take you so far.
My rolling partner last time was a woman. Below are her physical traits:
155 cm
~50 kg (more or less)
Petite
If you put us beside each other, you would think I could beat her up, but she was an experienced fighter. She even has a fight coming up soon. She was definitely more skilled than I am. When our master told us to roll, I knew I was going to get destroyed. I was super anxious when we were about to start.
We rolled for 5 minutes. Probably about 1 minute in, she made tap. After that, I knew I had to be more aggressive. I tried to submit her but I couldn't. I think she found it easy to counter my attempts. The best I could do was defend against her. After our time, she rested for about 1 minute or 2 and proceeded to roll with another fresh guy.
So the point of the story is you don't have to be big and strong to win a fight. Being big and strong of course helps, but skills and smarts will take you further. You don't even have to already be physically fit to start. You gradually become fit as you train.
Many martial artists aren't even big and mean. Many are shy or timid. They just turn into beasts and when fight, but they're real sweethearts in everyday life. Two of the fighters that I admire the most are women, Angela Lee and Stamp Fairtex. Angela Lee is a wife and mom and Stamp Fairtex is a total cutie. But both are very dangerous. Angela Lee also has a younger sister, Victoria Lee who is also impressive, and she's only 18 years old.
So, yeah, I encourage you to give it a shot. Try boxing, grappling, or arnis as a first. If you're still curious about starting, just DM me.
