Am I allowed to help someone else in a research project and contribute to their paper?

Post Body

Hi, so I am a PhD student at a UK university, I'm pretty good at one analysis technique so one of the people I know (from another university) has asked me to run it on their samples. It won't take a lot of my time but it will help them a lot (and me when they include me in their paper).

Is this an acceptible practice? Do I need approval from people in my institution?
