Hello /r/PhD,
I am an international student set to begin my PhD in Computer Science in the USA this fall (2023). I am eager to make the most of my time as a student, as I aim to join the industry after graduation, preferably in the High-Performance Computing (HPC) domain. However, I am also open to other domains as long as I can continue working on optimization-related projects. Coming from an Electrical Engineering background, I possess rudimentary programming and problem-solving skills, and I am determined to improve them while maintaining good grades and making significant research contributions.
Considering the current challenges surrounding the H1B visa, I am seeking your valuable insights and advice on how I can best prepare myself during these two years to secure employment upon graduation. I am particularly interested in the following areas:
Balancing Academics and Research: As I plan to work as a research assistant while pursuing my PhD, I am curious about effective strategies for managing my time between coursework, research responsibilities, and personal growth. How can I ensure I maintain good grades while also making valuable contributions to my research topic of optimization in HPC systems?
Networking and Industry Engagement: Recognizing the importance of networking, I am eager to explore avenues for connecting with professionals in the HPC domain and related fields. Are there any particular conferences, workshops, or online communities I should be aware of? Any tips on how to actively engage with industry professionals during my time as a student would be highly beneficial.
Internship Opportunities: I understand the significance of gaining industry experience, and internships can provide valuable exposure and networking opportunities. What steps should I take to maximize my chances of securing internships in the HPC or optimization field? Are there any specific companies or research organizations known for offering such internships?
Understanding Visa and Employment Challenges: Given the uncertain nature of H1B visa sponsorship, what actions can I take to improve my prospects of securing employment in the USA? Are there specific companies or industries that are more likely to hire international candidates, especially in the HPC or optimization domain? Any advice or insights regarding the current job market and potential alternatives would be greatly appreciated.
I am incredibly grateful for any advice, tips, or experiences you are willing to share. Your guidance will undoubtedly help me shape my career path and make the most of my time as a PhD student in the USA.
