I moved in with my fiancée five months ago. She has a dog and a cat, I have two dogs.
Previously, her dog and cat got along great. No problem sleeping on the couch together, same bed, etc.
Enter my dog. One of them doesn’t care a bit about the cat, and the cat has no issues with her. The other dog blitzes the cat every chance she gets, even after five months. The cat lives in the closet up on some out of reach shelving now.
I feel like we’ve tried everything. We’ve held the cat in front of her, put her box in the hallway to get her scent spread throughout the house, training collars, everything.
The dog knows better and she won’t attack when we’re present, it’s only while we’re asleep and the cat is sneaking around. We put a gate on the stairs so she has free rein upstairs during the day, but she still likes to come out at night.
Luckily, the dog only weighs about 10 lbs but it’s still enough to scare the cat away, and now the cat hates her. She’s a dachshund/chihuahua mix for reference, very very territorial.
