How much pain should I tolerate during lifting?

I've lost over 80 pounds in 12 years, but at least 30 pounds of it was muscle. I lifted when I was younger, and have free weights at home. I want some muscle back.

The problem is I've broken both my shoulders in the last eight years at the top of the humerus. Also I have multiple herniated discs and arthritis in my spine. The latter is a motivating factor for getting weight off so there's less weight pressing on my back.

I started lifting with 4 pound dumbells. At first, low reps were easy although my shoulders crack and pop. I'm up to two sets of 15. On overhead dumbell press and lateral raise, my shoulders hurt in the later reps around 7/10 on the pain scale. Sometimes I quit, I admit.

On overhead triceps extention, the latissimus dorsi hurts on the right side from the first rep because of scoliosis at a pain rating of about 6/10. Should I just ignore this? It didn't hurt when I was younger, but scoliosis progressed several degrees.

I want to increase my weights to 8 pounds, but I don't remember this much pain during lifting before.
