A Brief Bio of Pete Buttigieg

Pete is in his 8th and final year as Mayor of South Bend, IN - a position he was first elected to at only 29 years old. He grew up in South Bend, where he graduated valedictorian and was honored for the "JFK Profiles in Courage Essay Contents" for his essay about the courage of Bernie Sanders. He graduated Harvard magna cum laude, then received a first class honors degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from Pembroke College, Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He was married to his husband Chasten in 2018 and is the only openly gay candidate to reach the debate stage in a presidential campaign.

After graduation Pete served as a consultant for McKinsey and then later as a Naval intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve, where he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014. He was first elected mayor of South Bend in 2011 at age 29 - the youngest mayor of a US city with at least 100,000 residents. He also speaks fluent Norwegian and is conversational in Spanish, Italian, Maltese, Arabic, Dari, and French.

If we beckon them to our side and invite them to, basically invite them to the kind of party you want to get into, not because it’s exclusive but because it’s fun and because it makes you feel good. But also at a substantive level because it makes you kind of bigger-hearted and more secure as opposed to the politics of making people fearful and backward-looking."
