It’s one thing to downvote someone because you don’t agree with something that could impact anyone in the real world … anything political or controversial that gets downvoted, I kind of understand this.
But it’s a completely other thing to downvote someone on a show/movie discussion thread … Especially if you gave a well thought-out response with bullet points to back you. In such a way it’s clearly not trolling.
The discussion could be asking people which character ship should’ve been endgame or which season was your favorite. You do what’s asked because it’s a discussion after all, and then you get downvoted.
It irks me because the anonymous keyboard warrior that did this obviously took it personally even though it’s not based on real life. And, now your well-thought out response to the thread is undeservedly buried in downvote hell. You get punished for contributing to the discussion. I guess some people just can’t take the fact that not everyone thinks like them.
Downvoting in these cases should only be acceptable if you write something irrelevant to the question, or tell other people their opinion is stupid without offering any reason why or troll the entire discussion.
I’ve never once downvoted a comment i dont agree with. I’ll even upvote a comment I don’t agree with if I can see the person clearly took their time crafting a well thought out response…
I wish there were a way to know who downvoted you so you can confront them.
Attack the points not the person.
Thing is, downvoting an opinion, that you expect the public will be divided on, actually helps more people see that comment, if they're sorting by Controversial.
This is just how Reddit is set up.
But I understand why it's a pet peeve. It's also a dynamic on Reddit that downvoted comments will be further downvoted just because they're already downvoted.
Alas.
Well, sure. It's probably reasonable to assume most people are either lazy, or unaware of the nuances of downvoting, or motivated more by ego than the pursue of truth, or some combination thereof.
But among those who do value their fellow human being, and value public discourse, and pay attention to the ambiguity behind what a downvote can mean, it can be nice to be extended a respectful invitation to provide clarity.

No one said lazy, unaware or egocentric are the only reasons people downvote.
And I didn't say downvoting without explanation is clouding the pursuit of truth either. I said the meaning of an individual downvote is often ambiguous.
And I don't know how someone could read what I said and take it as implying a lack of care for human beings. Where did you get that idea?
Remember a true statement does not imply its converse is also true (per se).
