Please help, my dog won’t stop peeing inside.
Post Body

I’m sure this question has been asked before but I have tried everything I’ve read. I cannot figure out how to get my dog to stop peeing inside.

It’s always in the same spot and it’s only on days that my husband gets up and leaves for work. He always lets her out before he leaves and she always pees and poops outside, and I still somehow wake up to a mess in her spot. I’ve shampooed the carpet so many times that the room smells like a mix of chemicals and pee. I feel like I’ve tried everything. I’ve put her food and water over there as a way to change the meaning of the space, that didn’t work. I’ve tried blocking it off but it’s nearly impossible because it’s the living room and we only have so many chairs. We always let her out at night before bed. I’ve given her one of my husbands shirts to sleep with to help with the separation anxiety, I’ve given her calming dog treats, I even get up when he does and I sit with her and pet her and talk to her and then I go back to sleep. I don’t want to have to crate her when he leaves and I’m home but I’m at a loss. She eats at the same times morning and evening, has bones and toys and puzzles to try to divert her attention. Nothing is working.

Any other ideas?

My dog had a door to the backyard when he was doing this, but it was more his way of showing us he was upset and frustrated vs needing to actually go pee.

I would try giving her the treats/lick mats in the morning before he leaves(or as he’s leaving) and see if that helps, but if not, it’s not harmful for your dog to be crated for a little while to keep the peace(and cleanliness) in the house.

Is your dog a certain breed? There may be some breed specific behaviors that could be encouraged throughout the day that may make her feel more satisfied.

As you said there is no health reason for it, and since it’s attached to a specific thing happening during the day, there is SOMETHING that she’s trying to say to you guys (just like my dog was) and unfortunately it can be hard to pinpoint sometimes!

I know it can be difficult, but try your very best to remember that she’s not doing this on purpose, she just can’t speak you to directly!

My dog was peeing in the house for a while when my husband or I would leave, and it was 100% due to his lack of daily stimulation. (It was the dead of winter, so very minimal walks and I hadn’t learned anything about dog enrichment yet)

Does she get walked daily? And when she does get walked, do you give her time to sniff and enjoy her environment? When your husband leaves in the morning, maybe provide her with a lick mat/frozen Kong to give her something to focus on?
