Long Term ETFs

Hey y'all!
I have a question about long term ETFs, some people are dead set on ETFs like XGRO or VGRO but the ROI year over year seems to be much less than the likes of VOO, QQQ, SPY etc.
What am I missing here? I know XGRO is much more diversified than VOO but if the the US economy crashes aren't we all kinda screwed anyways?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
